NEW MATERIAL:A benzimidazole derivative shown by formula I (R is alkyl; X is amino or aminoalkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2) or an acid addition salt thereof. EXAMPLE:1-(2-Dimethylaminophenyl)methyl-2-(methylthio)benzimidazole. USE:Showing inhibitory action on secretion of acid in the stomach and protecting action on gastric mucosa and having low toxicity. Useful as a drug for remedying peptic ulcer and capable of being administered orally or parenterally. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula II is reacted with a compound shown by formula III (Y is Cl, Br or I) or an acid addition salt thereof in the presence of a solvent such as dimethylformamide, etc., in the presence of abase such as sodium hydride, sodium azide, etc., at room temperature - 100 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula I.
