PURPOSE:To prevent retention of carbon source particles in a reducing furnace, by forming a reducing and a cooling zones into an integrated box shape having a rectangular horizontal section of specific structure. CONSTITUTION:Both a reducing zone A and a cooling zone C have horizontal sectional area not lessening downward, respectively and the reducing zone is connected to the cooling zone without reducing the horizontal sectional area. The zones are formed into an integrated box shape having a rectangular horizontal section. An exhaust vent 6 of a reducing formed gas from a reducing furnace 3 is set higher than feed pipes 2 of carbon source particles. A feed opening 5 for a SO2-containing gas, a feed opening 7 for a cooling gas and an outlet 8 are laid on the wall face of the reducing furnace 3 and level difference in height between the feed opening 5 and the outlet 8 is made 1.5 times as long as the length of the short side of the rectangular horizontal section of the reducing furnace.
