PURPOSE:To rationalize the extent of color correction by subjecting a picture to color correction based on the deviation from a reference color if picture elements in a prescribed color exceeding a prescribed quantity exist on the picture. CONSTITUTION:The number of picture elements which drop to a flesh color area determined on an u'v' chromaticity diagram is counted by a part of the first flesh color counting part 2. The flesh color area is divided into squares and positions of the flesh color area to which picture elements drop are counted by the second flesh color counting part 3. The number of picture elements which drop to the flesh color area is compared with a threshold alpha by a picture element number discriminating part 4; and if the number of picture elements is <alpha, it is discriminated that flesh color does not exist on the image or exists a little there, and the processing is terminated. If the number of picture elements >=alpha, the position of the flesh color area which picture elements drop most is obtained by a maximum value discriminating part 5. A color difference from the reference flesh color is obtained by a correction extent operating part 6 to calculate the extent of correction. This extent of correction is transmitted to a color correcting part 7 through a signal line 10. Next, the color correction of the image is performed.
