PURPOSE:To prevent the debasing of display quality by a difference in the hue in an image plane by providing a light emitting element behind a liquid crystal display cell and varying the emission spectra of the light emitting element from the wavelength. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 13a, 13b are provided to glass substrates 12a, 12b and further oriented films 14a, 14b are provided to face each other. A nematic liquid crystal 18 is sealed between the oriented films 14a and 14b. The twisting spiral angle 16 of the liquid crystal molecules 17a, 17b is set at 150-300 deg. to constitute the liquid crystal display element. Polarizing plates 19a, 19b are provided to the outside of the substrates 12a, 12b. The light emitting element 11 which is electroluminescence is provided behind the polarizing plate 19b. The emission spectrum of the light emitting element 11 is so adjusted to have high intensity at <=550nm wavelength. The difference in the due of the same image plane by the uneven cell thickness is, therefore, decreased and the display quality of the liquid crystal display element of the large image screen is improved.
