Process for hardening and tempering a refractory lining of unhardened and untempered tar-bonded, pitch-bonded or synthetic resin-bonded blocks in steel casting ladles or the like and manufactured ladles

Instead of being lined with hardened blocks, steel casting ladles or the like are lined with cheap unhardened basic tar-bonded, pitch-bonded or synthetic resin-bonded refractory blocks. The walls and bottoms of the ladles are fitted with cheap, reusable protective masonry structures, provided with vent holes, of bricks or demolition blocks in normal block formats or protective plates with vent holes. Then the ladles are heated up to 300 DEG C, hardening and tempering taking place with air exclusion for no cost. By venting with air exclusion, the blocks retain the durability-enhancing carbon. By the use of cheap unhardened blocks instead of expensive hardened blocks, the costs of the ladles are reduced by about DM 0.50 per tonne of steel.
