An apparatus (10) for engraving substantially flat and/or slightly curved surfaces (15) of workpieces (11) is provided with a tool holder (37), having a working head (17), and with a scanning head (18) which can be lowered onto the surface (15) of the workpiece (11) which is to be processed, the working head (17) and scanning head (18) being capable of being moved together to and fro and/or up and down in the three coordinate axes (X, Y, Z). In order, with such an apparatus (11), to achieve a precisely constant depth of engraving in the relevant surface (15) of the workpiece (11), the scanning head (18) has an element (81) which is mounted by a ball joint and is provided with an approximately annular scanning surface (84), the working head (17) passing centrally through the axial through bore (83) of this element (81), and this element being provided, in the region of its scanning surface (84), with a blow-out aperture (95) which can be connected to a compressed air feed line (89). <IMAGE>
