The invention relates to a device for strain measurement in a system for tension levelling of continuously traversing metal strips, which consists of a tensioning device having at least two tensioning drums at the inlet and two tensioning drums at the outlet around which the strip is guided in an S-shape and between which stretching of the strip is performed. In order to provide a device for strain measurement which permits precise determination of the strain in an exact way, it is proposed that there are arranged at least on the first drum (4) on the inlet side and on the last drum (5) on the outlet side markings which can be detected in a contactless fashion and by means of which it is possible to determine a pulse difference number which corresponds to the strain and results from the different rotation angles occurring in a prescribed time interval. <IMAGE>
