PURPOSE:To attain the right-left shift of a tab via a single tab key as well as the up-down shift of the tab via the shift of a cursor, by using a tab shift direction designating means and a tab shift means in a documents compiling mode. CONSTITUTION:When a tab key is applied through a keyboard, a cursor is first erased. Then it is decided whether the contents stored in a tab shift direction register TBR indicate the upper, lower, right or left direction. for instance, TBR=2 is secured with the lower shift of a tab. Then it is decided whether the contents of a cursor line address YCR are smaller or not than the maximum line number MAXY by >=4. If so, 4 is added to the contents of the register YCR. If not, the number MAXY is substituted for the address YCR. Thus the cursor can moved down and therefore the tab is also moved down.
