PURPOSE:To read a normal data by providing plural index parts to an optional position on the inner circumference of the same track and accessing another index part automatically if a part of index is damaged. CONSTITUTION:Index parts 201-20n are written in advance at an optional prescribed interval on a magnetic disk 6. When the reading of a magnetic head group 4 is disabled for the index part 201, after it is detected by a read fault detection circuit 11 via a head selection circuit 1, a head group resetting circuit 10 resets automatically the head group 4, the access mechanism 2, the tracking circuit 3 and a servo head 5 for the search of the next index part 202. When the index part 202 is read and if any fault is detected, the similar resetting is applied to the index parts 203-20n, and when any of them is normally read, the index part is used to read all data in other track.
