An apparatus for inserting ingot moulds with highly radioactive waste into a borehole 2 works with a remotely actuable grab 7, suspended on a rope 20, for taking hold of the ingot mould and with a lifting mechanism 18 for moving the rope 20 with the grab 7 and the suspended ingot mould from a screening and transport container 5 into the borehole 2. Here, the apparatus is arranged on a mobile crane 8 with four-wheel steering. The mobile crane 8 has a pivot mounting 13 with a vertical axis and a swing jib 16 on the pivot mounting 13. The swing jib 16 is displaceable about a horizontal axis 15. A rope deflection pulley 21 is located on the free end of the swing jib 16, and the lifting mechanism 18 for the rope 20 sits above the pivot mounting 13 (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
