PURPOSE:To prevent the intermission and stop of a transmission system by using other external device so as to back up a faulty external device connected to a transmission station. CONSTITUTION:A backup control section 7 of a transmission station 2 registers an external device backing up external devices 3-l-3-n in a backup memory 8. If the external device, e.g., 3-l, causes a fault in this state, the backup control section 7 disconnects a port 10-1 of the device 3-1 and gives a backup port to the registered external devices registered in a backup setting memory 8. Then a faulty port is registered in a backup status memory 9 to cause the state of backup. Further, reception information addressed to the disconnected port 10-l is outputted to the port during backup and the input information from the port under backup is sent to other transmission station as the information from the disconnected port.
