<p>Compactor apparatus comprises a conveyor (31) for supplying articles to a hopper (32) positioned alongside the upper end of a compression chamber (26) in which a platen (24) powered by a hydraulic cylinder (25) is adapted to be reciprocated. The hopper (32) is mounted at one end of a beam balance (33), the displacement of the other end of which measures the weight of a charge in the hopper (32). When the presence of a specified charge in the hopper (32) is sensed, the conveyor (31) is disabled, the hopper (32) and hydraulic cylinder (25) with the platen (24) in the retracted position are swung laterally to bring the hopper (32) over the compression chamber (26) to dump the contained articles in to the chamber. The hopper and cylinder (25) are actuated to caused the platen (24) to compress the dumped articles, and the conveyor (31) is again enabled to supply articles to the hopper (32).</p> |
