The invention relates to the complete emptying of a hopper or container. The invention was based on the object of a) completely emptying a container of round or polygonal shape, b) avoiding cavities by bridge formation in the case of compacted bulk materials. According to the invention, this is achieved in that a chain which is driven and runs on the external wall over deflection rollers carries along a plurality of drag chains. The latter are attached in the centre of the container to a carousel which lies above the emptying opening in the manner of a bell and also rotates in a dragging manner. As a result, the bulk material is drawn into the centre directly at the base of the container and fed to the removal opening through lateral openings in the carousel. Cavity formation is ruled out since the entire container is completely cleared out.
