With respect only to an idling, average effective pressure Pi can be shown as the function of pressure Pw calculated from the change in the angular velocity of an expansion process. For example, in a four-cylinder engine, Pw of a cylinder generating a misfire largely changes to a negative side. That is, if Pw of a certain cylinder continuously varies to the negative in a certain value or more, said cylinder can be judged as generating a misfire.
