The valve comprises a housing element (5) including four flow channels (1,2,3,4). A valve seat, open to the exterior of the housing and the flow channels, supports a valve element (7). The valve element is formed from sealing pieces (10,11) with two pairs of recesses within the element for opening, closing and interconnecting flow channels. The recesses are on two separate planes, and each pair is at 90 deg. to the other. A shaft (8) fitted to the valve element rotates the element within the seat. When the valve element is rotated to permit fluid to enter the valve by two opposite flow channels (2,4) the fluid is forced to leave the valve by the other two opposed channels (1,3). This hydrostatically and hydrodynamically balances the valve.
