PURPOSE:To improve the wear resistance and exfoliation resistance of a coating by coating in inside layer consisting of a specific boride, carbide, nitride, carbonitride, nitride carbonate and nitride borocarbonate and outside layer consisting of a specific oxide. CONSTITUTION:Coating layers of >=1 kinds selected from >=1 kinds of the boride, carbide, nitride, carbonitride, nitride carbonate, nitride borocarbonate and the composite compd. thereof are coated on the substrate consisting of a sintered silicon nitride body. The outside layer consisting of Al2O3 or Al2O3 and ZrO2 is coated on the inside layer, by which the coated cutting tool is formed. The coating layer is directly stuck from the gaseous phase for both the inside and outside layers. The compd. of the inside layer forms the compd. with the silicon nitride of the substrate to maintain the substantial adhesive strength. The exfoliation resistance of the coating layer during cutting is improved by the presence the inside layer.
