PURPOSE:To enable accurate non-contact measurement of a flow rate of a high temperature fluid such as molten metal, by a method wherein a non-contact type distance meter runs in the direction crossing the flow of the fluid to measure the distance to the bottom of a passage from the distance meter and also the distance to the surface of the fluid therefrom and then, a cross-sectional area value of the fluid is calculated to determine the flow rate of the fluid from the obtained results. CONSTITUTION:With molten metal 3 not existing in a passage 2, a laser distance meter 1 runs across the width of the passage 2 perpendicular to the established direction of the molten metal 3 flows to send a value of the distance to the surface of a fixed member 7 forming the bottom of the passage 2 from the laser distance meter 1 along the direction of the running thereof to a computer 5 as the data of a function {Y2=D2(X)} corresponding to a width-wise displacement X of the passage 2. Then, the laser distance meter 1 is made to run in the same direction as that at the preceding time above the passage 2 to measure the distance to the surface of the molten metal 3 positioned above the bottom previously measured from the laser distance meter 1. The distance thus obtained is sent to the computer 5 as data of a function {Y2=D2(X)} likewise. A flow rate Q of the molten metal 3 is calculated from the functions Y1 and Y2.
