PURPOSE:To improve machining efficiency by providing an angular velocity detecting device for detecting the angular velocity of a rotary wheel spindle and controlling a grinding condition so that the detected value becomes a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:The spindle 2 of a grinding wheel 1 is rotated by a driving motor 3, and an angular velocity detecting device 4 of an encoder, a tachometer, etc. is installed on the driving motor 3. An angular velocity detecting device 9 is also installed on the driving motor 8 of a workpiece placing table 6. The detected values of these detecting devices are inputted into a controlling device 10. Thereby, any change in grinding performance such as clogging or the wear of abrasive grains and the like is detected as an angular velocity, a grinding condition is controlled so as to be the prescribed value, and the optimum grinding condition is determined, to carry out efficient machining. Also, a load change at the time of machining such as the breakage of a grinding wheel and the like, can be rapidly detected enabling a proper countermeasure to be taken.
