PURPOSE:To firmly bind cBN and binding material and to improve strength and wear resistance, by incorporating prescribed percentage of Al, etc., to the binding material binding cubic boron nitride (cBN) contained in it by prescribed percentage. CONSTITUTION:This sintered compact is formed of 65-75vol% cBN and the balance binding material. The above binding material contains 25-50wt% Al. Further, the binding material contains mixtures and compounds so that (Ti content in the binding material)/(content of transition metal elements M of group IVa, Va, and VIa except Ti of the periodic table)=2/3-97/100 (by atomic ratio) is satisfied. The above mixtures and compounds are represented by (TiCz, MC)y-(MN)1-y [where (y) is 0.3-1 and (z) is 0.5-0.85] and (Ti, M)(Cy, N1-y)z, respectively. Moreover, W (4-40wt%) is contained in the form of the above mixture or compound and WC.
