PURPOSE:To remove the side fins of upset and taper parts efficiently by providing a fin position marking device, a fin positioning device and a side fin copying lathe on a device for removing side fins occurring at the time of forging an oil well pipe with upsets. CONSTITUTION:A side fin removal device for an upset pipe comprises a fin position marking device for displaying the occurrence position of a side fin on a non-upset part at the time of upset forging, a fin positioning device for detecting a display mark 4 and positioning a side fin 3'' horizontally and a side fin copying lathe. The fin positioning device consists of a turning roller 6 supporting an upset pipe 3 laid on a skid 5 and a detecting sensor 7 for detecting the display mark 4. The copying lathe consists of a lathe proper bogie moving back and forth in a pipe axial direction toward the side of the skid 5 on a motor 10 for actuating the lathe proper and an auxiliary bogie fitted with a copying roller 38 and a milling cutter 34.
