PURPOSE:To evaluate the abrasion of a mechanical seal handily, by a method wherein the output value of a high frequency sensor for measuring high frequency vibration generated by a mechanical seal during the operation is converted to a variable value related to the abrasion of the mechanical seal and the signal thereof is inputted to determine an integrated value following the abrasion of the mechanical seal. CONSTITUTION:Vibration based on a solid sliding component of a rotary ring 12 and a driven ring 11 is transmitted through a casing 4 while being hardly attenuated to be detected with a high frequency vibration sensor 14. Therefore, the high frequency vibration sensor 14 senses only the vibration based on the solid friction of sliding surfaces of the driven ring 11 and the rotary ring 12. A signal thereof is amplified with an amplifier 15 and processed with the signal converter 16. The output a signal of the signal converter 16 is converted to digital from analog and inputted into an arithmetic unit 17, which previously memorizes a figure as a data table, to determine the abrasion of a mechanical seal by a computation. For example, abrasion amounts 21a' and 21b' or the like are outputted on display unit 18.
