N,N-diacetic acid aminomethylenephosphonic acid, having the formula(I), is prepd. by reacting an alkali metal salt of iminodiacetic acid (II) with a strong mineral acid to form the mineral and salt of (II) and the alkali metal salt of the acid, then reacting the salt of (II) with formaldehyde and phosphorous acid to give a mixture of (I) and an alkali metal salt, then adding water in an amount sufficient to dissolve this salt and separating (I). (I) is an intermediate in the prepn. of N-phosphonous/ hylglycine(glyphosate).
