N-phosphonomethyl glycine is produced by thermal dealky lation(above 200deg.C) of di- or tri-alk. metal salt aq. soln. of N-alkyl-N- phosphonomethyl glycine. N-alkyl is selected from C2-6 alkyl, hydroxy ethyl, N,N'-ethylenebis and isopropyl. Adding N,Nethylenebis-N-phophonomethylglycine 1.0g(2.7 mol), 50% NaOH 1.4g (17.7mol) and H2O 0.5ml into autoclave contg. 10% NaOH 20ml, flush with N2 and heat for 6 hr, and after cooling, adjust pH to 0.5 with HCl, reflux and separate by ion-exchange chromatography to give N- phosphonom ethyl glycine 0.56g(yield=61.5%).
