PURPOSE:To effectively utilize the sensible heat and component of the exhaust gas of a preliminary reduction furnace by subjecting said exhaust gas to a component adjustment, further replenishing and mixing the exhaust gas of a melt reduction furnace to and with said exhaust gas, heating up the gas by a heat exchange with the waste heat of the preliminary reduction furnace and using the gas for preliminary reduction. CONSTITUTION:Iron ore is subjected to the preliminary reduction in the preliminary reduction furnace 1 and is then blown together with a carbonaceous material, oxygen and slag forming agent into a molten iron in the melt reduction furnace 8, by which the iron ore is melt-reduced. The exhaust gas of the preliminary reduction furnace 1 in the above-mentioned method is cooled to a prescribed temp. a heat exchanger 2 and a cooler 3 and is subjected to the adjustment of the component such as CO2 in a decarburizing device 7. Part of the gas contg. a large amt. of reducing components such as CO and H2 generated from the melt reduction furnace 8 is mixed at a required amt. with the exhaust gas. The gaseous mixture obtd. in such a manner is heated up in the above-mentioned heat exchanger 2 by the sensible heat of the exhaust gas of the preliminary reduction furnace 1 and is then used as the reducing gas for the preliminary reduction.
