PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a molten iron from iron ore by preliminarily reducing the powder of the iron ore, then cooling the reduced iron ore in a cooler without reoxidizing the same through a pressure equalizing and evacuating chamber by gaseous N2, molding the iron ore together with a carbonaceous material and slag forming agent, passing the molded ore again through the pressure equalizing and evacuating chamber by the gaseous N2 and supplying the same to a melt reduction furnace. CONSTITUTION:The powder iron ore as well as coal in common use as a reducing agent and fuel and air are brought into reaction in a preliminary reduction furnace 1 to form preliminarily reduced ore. The ore is admitted through the pressure equalizing and evacuating chamber 2 in which an inert gaseous atmosphere of N2, etc., is maintained and through a cooler 3 to cool the ore down to about 500 deg.C by a heat exchange to prevent the reoxidation thereof by the air during the conveyance due to the high temp. of 800-900 deg.C. After such ore is once stored in a hopper 4, the ore is molded together with the carbonaceous material and slag forming agent to a pellet shape by a molding machine. The molded pellets are again stored in a storage tank 6 and every required amt. thereof is supplied via a pressure equalizing hopper 7 of a gaseous N2 atmosphere into the melt reduction furnace 8, by which the ore is melt-reduced and the molten iron is produced. The molten iron is efficiently produced by the melt reduction of the iron ore without reoxidation in mid-way.
