PURPOSE:To surely assure the sealability of the outlet part of a heat treatment furnace for a long period of time by supplying a powdery sealing material different in diameter from a material to be treated to the aperture of the above- mentioned outlet part so that the space of the aperture is embedded. CONSTITUTION:While the iron powder 1 which is the material to be treated is a steel belt 2, the iron powder is heat-treated in an atmospheric gas. The aperture 4 is formed of the projecting part 9 and bottom surface 9a of the end wall 3a of the outlet part 3 of the heat treatment furnace constituted in the above-mentioned manner to said outlet part. A gate plate 5 having the length approximately equal to the width of the above-mentioned aperture 4 is further disposed between the top surface of the iron powder 1 and the upper wall 3b of the outlet part 3. The powder material 8 for sealing having the diameter different from the diameter of the above-mentioned iron powder 1 is supplied from a hopper 7 via a supply pipe 6 to the region between the above- mentioned gate plate 5 and the end wall 3a. The space between the steel belt 2 and the iron powder cake 1 in the above-mentioned aperture 4 is thus filled by the powder material 8 for sealing, by which the outlet part 3 is sealed.
