PURPOSE:To cope with a handwriting change by storing plural standard patterns for a character category, preparing the memory to store beforehand the information to designate which standard pattern is used to respective character categories for respective writers separately. CONSTITUTION:For the character pattern of an un-known writer inputted from a photoelectric transducer 5, the sampling, quantizing, pretreating and segmenting processes are executed and the pattern is stored into memories 63 and 64. A dictionary 61 of a memory is formed beforehand so as to have plural standard patterns for respective character categories, and a table 62 stores the information to show the standard pattern number for respective character categories for respective writers. The character pattern of the un- known writer and the standard pattern of the same category in a handwriting dictionary 61 are successively compared, the character pattern of the un-known writer and the similar standard pattern are determined, and with the number of the similar standard pattern as a key, a writer is searched in the table 62.
