PURPOSE:To discriminate the surface flaw and the internal defect of a round steel, and to improve the yield of the round steel by combining the third arithmetic unit for comparing the surface flaw position storage information with the internal defect position storage information, of the first and the second arithmetic units. CONSTITUTION:A measuring pulse from a measuring roller 1 is brought to pulse count by a pulse counter 3 by using a round steel detecting signal by a round steel detecting sensor 2, as a start timing. Also, in parallel with it, a position in the peripheral direction of round steel of a rotary flaw detecting probe 6 is measured 7. When a surface flaw detecting signal is sent from a surface flaw deciding circuit 4, a pulse count value in the longitudinal direction at that time point, and the position in the peripheral direction are stored 5, 8, respectively. On the other hand, a pulse from a pulse generator 9 is brought to pulse count 11 by using a round steel detecting signal from a round steel detecting sensor 10, as a start timing, and when an internal defect detecting signal is sent from an internal defect deciding circuit 12, a pulse count value is stored 13, and a longitudinal position, and a position in the peripheral direction of the defect are calculated 14, 15. Each information of the first and the second arithmetic units is compared by the third arithmetic unit, and a surface flaw and an internal defect are discriminated.
