PURPOSE:To remarkably shorten the system rise time by performing the most of the diagnosing/setting operations of a main storage device that originally needs much time owing to its large capacity simultaneously and in parallel with another system rise operation. CONSTITUTION:A computer system consists of a central processing unit CPU1, a main storage device MMU2, a channel controller CHC4 and a diagnosis processor DPU5 which are all connected to a system controller SCU3. The SCU3 contains a main storage diagnosing part 3a and gives an access to the MMU2 independently of the CPU1 and the CHC4. In addition, the part 3a contains an address generating circuit, etc., to the MMU2 and carries out the diagnosis. In a system rise mode, a system initialization program is loaded together with generation of a system working environment, the loading of an OS and the setting of the working environment of the OS itself carried out simultaneously and in parallel with the diagnosing/setting processing of other parts of the MMU2. In such a way, the system rerise time can be shortened after breakdown of the system.
