PURPOSE:To obtain the titled glass which is free from mixing of oxygen and excellent in infrared transmission by introducing a raw material of chalcogenide glass contg. silicon into a crucible made of boron nitride ceramic and melting it in the oxygen-free atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A crucible 2 made of boron nitride ceramic is inserted to the inside of a quartz glass tube 1 and a raw material 3 of chalcogenide glass contg. silicon is introduced into the crucible 2 and the inside of the glass tube 1 is regulated to the oxygen-free atmosphere and closely sealed. Then the glass tube 1 is slanted and heated while imparting rotation and rocking, and the raw material 3 is melted and thereafter cooled.
