PURPOSE:To prevent spreading and losing of the steam and promote water gas reaction to increase combustion speed by throwing a water absorbing polymer which contains water and coal or fuel oil into a furnace where combustion is in progress and thermally decomposing the moisture to generate water gas and make it burn. CONSTITUTION:A high water absorbing polymer consisting of a high molecular electrolyte which contains carboxylic acid salt which has a crosslinked structure is used as a water absorbing polymer, and the shape of the water absorbing polymer is preferably spherical. Polymers in general have high strength when they are spherical and provide good transportability. An average particle diameter of 20-250mum is preferable. The amount of water contained depends on the kind of water absorbing polymer, shape of coal, and the conditions of a combustion system. If the amount of water is excessive, the temperature drop in the combustion chamber becomes too large, and it should be avoided. When those fuels are thrown into a boiler in which high temperature combustion is in progress, the water absorbing polymer is rapidly heated to high temperature, and the water content in the polymer turns into steam gradually, and most of the water is held in the polymer for several tens of seconds.
