PURPOSE:To improve specific fuel consumption and starting performance without deterioration in an air utilization factor and an average effective factor, by a method wherein, during a stroke in the vicinity of a point of time when a piston head is raised to a top dead center, a nozzle hole throttle projection is rushed in a nozzle hole communicated with a swirl chamber and a main combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:A fuel injection space 19 is formed in the end part, facing a cylinder block 7, of the left half of a cylinder head 11, and the lower opening edge thereof is engaged with an injection chamber member 20 to form a swirl chamber 1. A nozzle hole 3 is formed in the injection chamber member 20 in a manner that its axis is directed to the direction of the tangential line of the swirl chamber 1, and the swirl chamber 1 is communicated with a main combustion chamber 2, formed with the upper half of the cylinder, through the nozzle hole 3. In this constitution, a nozzle hole throttle projection 5 is projected in a position situated facing the nozzle hole 3 of the piston head 4, and during a stroke in the vicinity of a point of time when the piston head 4 is raised to a top dead center 6, the projection 5 is rushed in the nozzle hole 3. This rush decreases the sectional area of the passage of the nozzle hole 3.
