PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having excellent moldability, etc., by carrying out esterification reaction in the presence of an organic Sn compound catalyst and adding a polycondensation reaction catalyst to the reaction system under a specific condition, thereby remarkably decreasing the content of minute foreign materials originated from the organic Sn compound in the polymer. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid component composed mainly of terephthalic acid and a diol component composed mainly of 1,4-butanediol are subjected to esterification reaction in the presence of an organotin compound (e.g. butyltin hydroxyoxide) as an esterification reaction catalyst. After the completion of the esterification reaction, a polycondensation reaction catalyst (e.g. tetraethyl titanate) is added to the reaction system under agitation at a circumferential speed of >=4m/sec, preferably >=5m/sec to effect the polycondensation reaction and obtain the objective polymer. The above polycondensation reaction catalyst is preferably added to the system in the form of a diol solution, etc.
