PURPOSE:To display clearly the correlation between a recording elapsed time and a recordable maximum time by providing a recording state dislay control means on an automatic answering telephone set and displaying information on a dot display device for displaying talking control information. CONSTITUTION:When the recording mode designation switch in a function key group 8 is operated in a standby state, a control circuit 6 is in the recording mode and the next control is applied. That is, the display format for recording mode stored in advance in a ROM 12 is read at first and it is displayed on the dot display device 15. For example, 100-strip pattern having a length representing a recordable maximum time in the longitudinal direction of the display pattern are used as the time scale and while the length of black pattern is increased at every second, the reply message is reproduced. When the reproduction of the stored full response message is finished and the user operates the stop button, the circuit 6 detects it to stop a timer 9 to clear the display of the black pattern and the mode is restored to the operation supervision.
