The device comprises, inside a housing 1, a carton of teargas 12 whose valve 13 is opposite an aperture 3 of the housing 1. When a switch incorporated in the door of the protected premises is actuated, a motor 17 is turned on by means of a time delay device 18. At the same time, an audible alarm 22 is triggered. After the time delay period, the motor 17 moves a lever 15 which actuates the valve 13 and allows emission of a jet of gas. An adjustable timing device 19 controls the emission duration of the jet of gas. The device may be used for protecting vehicles or living accommodation. <IMAGE>
