Process for the preparation of alumina possessing a large specific surface stabilised for high temperatures, characterised in that: - in a first stage, an aqueous solution containing a suitable quantity of at least one soluble salt of at least one stabilising cation chosen from La, Pr, Eu, Y, Nd and a soluble aluminium salt is mixed with an aqueous suspension of boehmite; - in a second stage, the hydroxides of the said stabilising cation and of aluminium are coprecipitated; - then, in a third stage, calcination of the mixture obtained is carried out, at approximately 620 DEG C, so as to convert, in a known way, the boehmite and the said hydroxides to mixed oxides. It also relates to the products obtained. <IMAGE>
