PURPOSE:To readily produce a preform of good quality in which a rodlike core material is covered with a clad material without damaging the surface of the core material, by dipping the core material in a molten clad material and cooling the whole. CONSTITUTION:A clad material 4 contained in a vessel 1 is heated by a heater 5 and a core material 6 formed into a rodlike shape is then dipped in the clad material 4 to cool the core material 6 and the clad material 4 by a cooler 8. After cooling, the resultant preform consisting of the core material 6 and the clad material 4 is taken out of the vessel 1. According to this method, the aimed preform of good quality which is a preform for optical fibers can be readily produced. |
