The cooling water circuit (6) of an IC engine comprises a coolant pump (3) with inlet line (13) extending into a water supply, e.g. a basin for a stationary engine or surrounding water for a ship's engine. The pump outlet line (14) connects (16) to the inlet (15) of a compressed air (11) driven ejector (8) via a valve (7) whilst the air supply line contains a further valve (10), the valves being actuated (12) by a water level sensor (4) downstream of the pump. The arrangement is such that, before engine start, the valves (7,10) are opened if no water is present in the pump to prime the pump. The line (14) preferably contains a non-return valve (5) downstream of the sensor (4) and the branch (16) whilst the pump inlet line (13) contains a non-return foot valve (2). The compressed air may be supplied from a storage vessel for engine start air or the like.
