An oxygen sensor comprises a hollow cylindrical member (4) closed at one end (15) but open at the other (14) to admit a reference gas. There is at least one radial through hole (2,3) in the hollow cylindrical member. An oxygen-ion conductive solid electrolyte layer (8) has at least one pair of electrodes (5,6) on its opposite sides. The electrolyte layer (8) is wrapped around the hollow cylindrical member (4) with the electrode (5) on its inner side facing the through hole (2). Heating elements (7) may be provided on either of the faces of the electrolyte layer (8) with an insulating layer disposed between the element and electrolyte layer. <IMAGE>
