To clamp workpieces (3) and tools in automatic machine tools, only one drive member (9) in the form of a self-locking screw part is used to actuate the clamping member (12). A stop (18, 19) reaches here into the swivel path of the clamping member (12) so that the clamping member (12) performs first a swivel movement and then an axial movement and vice versa solely under the action of the drive member (9). This results in a considerably smaller space requirement in a cost-effective construction of the clamping device (2), and extremely short clamping times are achieved for both the swivelling and the clamping. <IMAGE>
