PURPOSE:To obtain a sufficient impact absorbing effect without sacrificing the axial compactness of an engine starting device and to aim at enhancing the durability of the same, by using a coil spring as an absorbing mechanism for impacts in the rotational and axial directions of a pinion. CONSTITUTION:A pinion 5 slidably and rotatably fitted on the output shaft 3 of a motor is provided with a cylindrical section 53 as a rear extension. A spline member 4 is fitted on the output shaft 3 in a helically splined engagement on the rear side of the pinion 5. Further, a conical coil spring 6 disposed in the cylindrical section 53 of the pinion 5 allows the pinion 5 and the spline member 4 to axially displace and rotate, relative to each other, within the resiliently displaceable range thereof and constitutes a coupling means 7 for coupling between both pinion 5 and the spline member 5. With this arrangement, an impact absorbing mechanism may be made to be axially compact and may be formed of one part, thereby it is possible to make the engine starting device lightweight.
