In the process, the finishing and decoration of the surfaces of piece goods produced, preferably stitched, from tear-resistant plastic web material are carried out not directly but indirectly. In the process, a motif is first applied to a highly flexible printing foil using a suitable printing ink. During the printing operation, the printing foil is located on a carrier. Its reverse side is coated with a contact adhesive which can also be applied after the printing operation. The printing foil is subsequently laid self-adhesively on the surface of the piece goods. In this manner, curved surfaces and doubled material, produced during fabrication, on the surface of the piece goods are bridged over without interruption by the printing foil. There are no discontinuities in the motif at the shoulders or steps and a satisfactory and neat printed image is obtained in multicolour printing. The process is provided in particular for finishing already fabricated packaging and carrier bags. The external surfaces, interrupted by applied tapes and handle loops, can thus be effectively and decoratively printed.
