Method for asynchronous serial data transmission with transmission of signals which in each case contain a control bit, and circuit arrangement to carry out the method. In order to set the parity bit of the signals to be transmitted in each case as a control bit, a device for forming parity bits is controlled signal-by-signal in such a way that the parity bit assumes a pre-defined first logic state in the case of a signal with address information and assumes a second pre-defined logic state in the case of a signal of a different type. The parity bits obtained in this way serve as control bits. The method can be used advantageously in monitoring systems in which a central computer is connected via a serial bus to a plurality of monitoring devices. <IMAGE>
