MANUFACTURE OF HIGH TEMPERATURE STRENGTH SILICON NITRIDE SINTERED BODY

A sintered article of silicon nitride having exceptional strength at elevated temperature is produced by mixing silicon nitride powder with particular amounts of SiO2 powder and oxides of at least one of the metals yttrium or the rare earths of the lanthanum series. The sintered article of silicon nitride thus obtained contains silicon nitride particles, crystalline Si2N2O and a metal silicate whose glass-like phase is discontinuously distributed so that excellent behaviour at high temperatures results.
