PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance while suppressing side reaction, by inserting electrodes in an alkali (earth) metal chloride and dehydrochlorinating 1,2-dichloropropane in a molten salt heated by utilizing heat generation of resistance between the electrodes by electric conduction. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes, preferably carbon are inserted into an alkali metal chloride, e.g. LiCl, NaCl, CaCl2 or BaCl2, and 1,2-dichloropropane is subjected to dehydrochlorination reaction at 400-750 deg.C, preferably 500-700 deg.C in a molten salt heated by utilizing heat generation of resistance between the electrodes by electric conduction to afford the titled substance. Different kinds of alkaline (earth) chlorides are preferably mixed for use and heating by an external heat source as an assistance may be carried out until the temperature attains a given value. EFFECT:A large quantity of heat can be supplied to the reaction system with ready temperature control of the molten salt while maintaining uniform temperature distribution. USE:A raw material for epichlorohydrin.
