The phase-gating controller for an AC valve (3) which is connected between an AC voltage source (5) and a load, for example a motor (1), comprises a zero crossing detector (13), which responds to zero crossings of the AC voltage, and digital delay and regulation means in the form of a microprocessor (9), which comprise a timer (21), which can be triggered by the zero crossing detector (13), for a controllable delay time. After the controllable delay time has elapsed, the microprocessor supplies, at one output port (23), a triggering pulse to the AC valve (3). The microprocessor (9) calculates the delay time as a function of digital sample values of an actual signal which is supplied by an actual-value transmitter (7), and digital data which are supplied by a required value transmitter (11). The delay time is processed in a regulation routine which interrupts the timer (21) when the delay time has elapsed for an interrupt routine which supplies the triggering pulse and loads the calculated delay time for the next triggering of the AC valve into the timer (21). A further interrupt routine, which initiates the actual value transmitter (7), is provided for determining the actual sample values and the delay times resulting from them. The routines have different priorities. The regulation routine has the lowest priority. The routine which emits the triggering pulse has the highest priority. <IMAGE>
