A first ultrasonic array (3; 50) is aligned with its irradiation direction (5; 54) directed onto a patient in such a way that a cross-section (1) is sensed. From the Doppler information contained in the received ultrasonic echo signal, the speed component in the irradiation direction (5; 54) is determined for blood flowing in the cross-section (1). The measurement is repeated from a second irradiation direction (9) which is displaced by an angle alpha ; instead, the use of a second ultrasonic array (52) is also possible, which array (52) is arranged offset by the angle alpha . A second speed component which lies in the direction of the second irradiation direction (9; 56) results from the second measurement. A resulting speed vector signal or Doppler signal (Dp, V<-) is formed from both speed components and presented in a VDU (21; 64). Furthermore, a method for operating the ultrasonic device is disclosed. Using the device and the method, the blood supply pattern of a vessel, for example of a kidney, can be represented taking into account the actual two-dimensional direction of flow in the examination cross-section (1). <IMAGE>
