PURPOSE:To secure safety of travelling of a vehicle in moving backward and turning right or left by calculating a distance up to an obstruction and direction during travelling of the vehicle, and also calculating a passing distance of the vehicle on the basis of a current turning angle of tires and vehicle sizes in order to alarm a driver when the obstruction can not be evaded. CONSTITUTION:The annunciator in the caption is started after movement of a vehicle is detected by a speed sensor 3, and a microcomputer 61 is reset by a reset circuit 65, through a speed signal processing circuit 62 and an input circuit 64. Then, ultrasonic pulse is delivered out of an ultrasonic transmitter 1 from a control section 61a through an output circuit 67 and a transmitting circuit 68. When said ultrasonic pulse hits an obstruction in front of the vehicle, its reflected wave is received by an ultrasonic receiver 2. Now, a distance and a direction from the vehicle up to the obstruction are calculated in an operation unit 61c on the basis of said reflected wave, and at the same time a passing range of the vehicle is calculated in the same unit 61c on the basis of furning angle of tires given by a steering angle defector 4 and various sizes of the vehicle.
