Process for polymerising ethylene in the presence of a catalyst based on TiCl4 and MgCl2 and an alkylaluminium as cocatalyst, characterised in that polymerisation is carried out in the presence of a catalyst prepared by milling together TiCl4 and MgCl2 previously brought to a specific surface greater than 30m<2>/g, the weight ratio MgCl2/TiCl4 being between 6 and 60, the cocatalyst being chosen from alkylaluminiums in which at least one of the alkyl radicals has at least six carbon atoms.
