The hand-held appliance has a gripping part constructed as a housing (11). A small motor (1) and a gearbox (7) are accommodated in the housing. The shaft (3) of the small electric motor (1) bears a pinion (2) which protrudes into the gearbox (7). Provided in the gearbox (7) is a shaft (4) which runs perpendicular to the shaft (3) of the small motor and on which a gearwheel (6) and an eccentric (5) are firmly seated. The gearwheel (6) is engaged with the pinion (2) of the shaft (3) of the small motor. The eccentric (5) is connected to a toothed rack (8). A circular motion, a straight back-and-forth motion or a back-and-forth motion in a circular sector are imparted by the rotating gearshaft (4) to the different body care means (9, 12, 14) which are attached removably to the appliance. The risk of injury when using this appliance is ruled out. <IMAGE>
